Speech Therapy/AAC

Speech-Language Pathology Department

The Timothy School’s Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) department is committed to providing innovative, evidence-based therapy while honoring cultural, linguistic, and individual diversity. Our speech-language pathologists are passionate about delivering individualized services using a total communication approach, supporting students’ ability to communicate effectively at school, at home, and in the community.

The mission of the SLP department is to empower every student through language-rich learning opportunities that foster growth throughout their time at The Timothy School. To address the core needs of our students, speech-language pathologists collaborate closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff as part of a unified educational team. This integrated approach ensures that each student’s communication goals are woven into a comprehensive, individualized plan, promoting the development of communication, language, cognitive, and social skills while supporting carryover and generalization across settings.

The Timothy School emphasizes total communication, with the goal of expanding each student’s ability to communicate with all people, in all environments. The SLP department uses augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to support communication independence. AAC includes methods beyond spoken language, such as picture exchange systems (PECS), switches, and high-tech devices like iPads. Students may use AAC as their primary means of communication or as a supplement to support language development, academic engagement, and social interaction. Our SLP team is dedicated to identifying and implementing the communication modalities that best support each student’s success.
