Transition Program
Transition Program
The Transition Program begins at age 14 and continues through graduation, preparing students and families for life after The Timothy School. Transition planning is individualized and focuses on employment, independent living, post-secondary education or training and community participation. Students explore career interests, practice vocational and daily living skills, and gain real-world experience through community-based internships. Families are guided through critical steps such as applying for benefits, guardianship and adult services, ensuring a smooth path from school to adulthood.
Individualized Pathways
No two students are alike, which is why transition planning is highly personalized. Each student’s program is built around their strengths, interests and goals, focusing on:
-
Employment – exploring career interests, developing job readiness skills and participating in community-based internships.
-
Independent Living – learning daily routines such as budgeting, grocery shopping, meal preparation and managing transportation.
-
Post-Secondary Education & Training – preparing for further learning opportunities and continued skill development.
- Community Participation – fostering connections through volunteer work, recreational outings and social engagement.
Real-World Experience
Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, students gain meaningful workplace experiences. They practice writing resumes, interviewing and showing up ready for work while building the confidence and habits that carry into adulthood. Beyond work, students also engage in community outings like bowling, dining out or visiting the library — experiences that strengthen both independence and social connections.
Support for Families
Transition planning includes the entire family. We provide guidance through important steps such as applying for adult services, benefits and guardianship. By walking alongside families in these critical decisions, we ensure that the path from school to adulthood is as smooth and supported as possible.
Preparing for the Future
The Transition Program empowers students to take meaningful steps toward their next chapter — whether that’s entering the workforce, pursuing further education or developing greater self-sufficiency. With the right preparation, students leave The Timothy School ready to live, work and belong as active members of their communities.
